Canon 1D X… Cracked Wide Open

September 17th, 2012 3 comments

I found out the hard way that the 1D X’s magnesium alloy shell is far from bulletproof after a tumble off a golf cart onto concrete left me with a crack in the armor. Cam still performed flawlessly, but so much for the weather sealing (and the attached 24-70). That’s the one downfall of the Spider Holster I use; no camera straps.

After a short two-day visit to Canon’s New Jersey repair facility, the body transplant was complete.  Canon was kind enough to return the damaged parts, for your viewing pleasure.

Jacked up 10-22mm Lens

May 11th, 2010 1 comment

A couple weeks ago, the aperture on my wide angle 10-22mm lens got stuck open.  I’m a CPS (Canon Processional Services) member, so I get rush service as well as a nice discount on repairs.  I shipped my lens in last Monday, and the repaired lens was back in my hands last Friday already!  I was most impressed with the immediate turnaround, and excited to have my lens “back to factory spec”.

We shot a band promo over the weekend, and when reviewing my images off the wide angle, I immediately saw something was horribly wrong.  The center of the image was relatively sharp, but the right 1/3 of the frame was terribly out of focus!  The left was not quite as bad. but still not good. The depth of field when focused near infinity is so deep at 10mm, that the entire frame should be tack sharp.  One problem fixed, another problem introduced. I borrowed another copy of the lens from Colin to do a side-by-side comparison, before contacting Canon about their mistake.

Canon issued me a free overnight shipping label, so the lens is now it her way back to New Jersey.  Lets hope they get the repair right this time!

Here’s an example of the problem with my Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 lens.
